ALL ABOUT BOOKS!

Join together in our first William Morris Society regional event for the Pacific Northwest! It will be held at the Collins Memorial Library at the University of Puget Sound on Sunday April 30th from 1:00 to 4:00.  We have the pleasure of joining with the Book Club of Washington, a bibliophile club in support of the culture of the book.

We will visit the Book Arts Studio and have a chance to print a keepsake on the Iron Hand Press as well as try our "hand" at creating some illuminated letters based on a lesson plan from the British Society (see photos above). Local artist Mark Hoppmann will share the story of the restoration of the Iron Hand Press.

Visit the Special Collections and have a hands on view of some Kelmscott Press books as well as those of the Arts & Crafts period. Have a chance to see renowned designer bookbinder Gabby Cooksey's recently rebound copy of News from Nowhere (see photo above) as well as treasures from the collection, including contemporary artists' books, that will be on display.

Enjoy a short presentation by esteemed calligrapher Terri Kruger, an avid collector of all types of writing implements, including an amazing collection of antique inkwells (see photo above).  Terri will display some of her treasures from Europe, many from the UK.

We will have the pleasure of viewing the fascinating exhibition Scripts, Scribes & Scribbles.  This exhibit is all about hand lettering including medieval manuscripts, hand written books, 19th century penmanship textbooks, pens and inkwells, examples of contemporary calligraphy, personal handwritten journals and letters (see photo above), writing desks, a “doodle wall,” and much, much more!  Scripts, Scribes & Scribbles brings together examples of handwriting and illustrates how handwriting has been taught, reproduced, and reimagined over the past five hundred years. Displaying a range of books and manuscripts from the Collins Library collection and many private donors and collectors, the exhibition addresses the role of handwriting in the age of print newly legible.  Curators of the exhibit, local artist and collector Mark Hoppmann and Collins Library Director, former WMS Society President, Jane Carlin, will take us through a guided tour.

We will conclude the afternoon in the lovely Northwest Room of the Library that is home to custom furniture designed in the Arts & Crafts style by the Joinery in Portland, with an afternoon tea and a bit of "bubbly" as well.
